Performance/Film

1986. Around 90 cities and villages in the vicinity of Chernobyl are evacuated. Pétro and Nadia, a couple – 60 years old at the time, refuse to leave the death zone and remain behind in their native village of Zvizdal. From 2011 until 2016, Belgian multi-media artists Bart Baele and Yves Degryse alias Berlin accompanied the couple and portrayed their life in the ghost town. They superimpose their documentary film material onto live recordings made in a model of Nadia and Pétro’s living space that is true to scale. Zvizdal is a film performance about loneliness, survival, poverty, hope and the love of two old people left to their own devices amidst a world permeated by colourless, odourless and yet omnipresent radiation.
