Something is moving under a mountain of 1,000 coffee cups. Hafiz Dhaou seems to dig his way into the light of the dawning day from under the ruins of past catastrophes. “It’s a hymn for the Arab Spring heroes’ bravery and will to survive” is what flashes through the well-informed theater visitor’s mind. “But it’s just about coffee” is what Hafiz Dhaou seems to say with a wink – though he appears to be giving us a bit of a runaround here. But we follow our noses. This is where something suddenly becomes apparent, and we succumb to the slowly spreading fragrance and the surprising poetics – at least for western European audiences – of fresh coffee.
