In films and leisure parks, the Disney imperium has made Snow White the essence of the Happy Girl. From Los Angeles to Hong Kong, princess-actresses enchant audiences by waving and smiling. The choreographer Eisa Jocson, who lives in Manila, observes this apparently universal performance of happiness from a particular perspective: Disneyland Hong Kong is the largest employer for Philippine dancers in the region, but because of the colour of their skin they are only cast in nameless subsidiary roles. Jocson, together with the performance artist Russ Ligtas, puts an end to this by appropriating the physicality of Snow White and creating a playing field of identities.

“[…] the body of the princess is an empty vessel inhabited by those who need the work. The construction of this fairy tale is based on the sweat and never-wavering smile of the body working, the body of color working – of a body of color always working. [..] This is familiar territory if you have been following Jocson’s work. A master in embodying the affects of an entertainer’s daily grind, the sexualized, the fetishized, the underbelly of a migratory trajectory not often talked about in the open but lurking in the shadows. The body in this case, that of the Princess, is the most Jocson has taken on so far – where the sexualized and engendered role is wrapped in candy-sweetness and tailor-made for under-13 adulation.

“[..] In der aktuellen Performance-Szene ist es schon seit Jahren angesagt, Genderrollen zu dekonstruieren. Aber Jocson dreht die Schraube weiter, ihr geht es um eine politische Grundierung. Sie fragt ganz konkret: Welche Rollen nehmen wir ein, wenn wir gewisse Dienstleistungen – von erotischem Tanz im Club bis zur Krankenpflege – ausüben? Welche tradierten Frauen- und Männerbilder werden von uns erwartet? [..]Als im Herbst 2015 eine Disneyland-Dependance in Hongkong eröffnete, zog dies viele Kunstschaffende aus den Philippinen an. Es war lukrativer, sich als Micky Maus oder Schneewittchen zu verkleiden und Kinder zu unterhalten, als im Staatsballett in Manila zu tanzen. Dabei wollte Disney die Prinzessinnen nicht philippinisch besetzen – die Hauptrollen blieben Weißen vorbehalten. So mussten Jocsons Kolleginnen Zebras, Korallen und Tintenfische spielen. Insofern ist “Princess” auch die Aneignung einer Rolle, die ihren Landsleuten in der Realität vorenthalten bleibt.”

Biography
Eisa Jocson
Eisa Jocson is a contemporary choreographer and dancer from the Philippines, trained as a visual artist, with a background in ballet. With her work she exposes body politics in the service and entertainment industry as seen through the unique socioeconomic lens of the Philippines. She studies how the body moves and what conditions make it move – be it social mobility or movement out of Philippines through migrant work. In her creations – from pole to macho dancing and hostess work, to Disney princess to Superwoman and to Zoo animals – capital is the driving force of movement pushing the indentured body into spatial geographies. Jocson has toured extensively in major contemporary festivals with her solo triptych: “Death of the Pole Dancer” (2011), “Macho Dancer” (2013) and “Host” (2015) and with the HAPPYLAND series, produced by Mousonturm: “Princess” (2017), “Your Highness” (2017), “Manila Zoo” (2021). “The Filipino Superwoman Band” (2019), a work on the affective labor of Overseas Filipino Musicians was commissioned by Sharjah Biennale. She is a recipient of the 2018 Cultural Centre of the Philippines 13 Artists Award, the winner of Hugo Boss Asia Art Award in 2019 and received the 2021 SeMa-HANA Award for the work TFSB2020: Superwoman, Empire Of Care at the Seoul MediaCity Biennale.
