Ghida Hachicho is one of the most exciting voices on Beirut’s more recent dance and performance scene. Her choreographic works captivate audiences with their sharp analysis and love of detail. In “Studies on the Movement of a Group”, which will receive its world premiere as part of  “This Is Not Lebanon”, Hachicho investigates the behaviour of groups and swarms. Starting from an understanding of groups as compositions of changeable relationships, patterns, networks and images, the performance considers the processes by which groups are formed: how are relationships created between the participants, and what can they say about the individual in relation to the group? In their explorations, Hachicho and her performers evoke the movements of animals as well as those of human beings. The codes, behaviour patterns, interactions and dynamics these contain are both imitated and probed with the aid of choreographic practices and scores. This generates a comic effect that comments indirectly on the political processes by which groups are formed.
